Moraine Lake, Banff, Banff

The Basics

Moraine Lake, one of the most photographed spots in the Canadian Rockies, is a common fixture on sightseeing tours of Banff National Park, Lake Louise, and Yoho National Park. Moraine Lake tours depart from Banff and Calgary, and typically include sightseeing stops at other Alberta beauty spots such as Victoria Glacier, Takakkaw Falls, Lake Louise, and Bow, Emerald, and Peyto lakes. Moraine Lake is also a stop on the hop-on, hop-off Banff bus, which runs between Banff and Lake Louise. Active travelers can opt for a 5.6-mile (9-kilometer) guided hike through Larch Valley, or, in summer, rent a canoe from the Moraine Lake Boathouse and paddle out onto the water.

Fantastic trip with an incredible guide. Thumbs up!
Chris was an outstanding tour guide. He gave us a lot of information about the park and lakes, bears in the area, what was going on in Banff, other worthwhile places to visit, and basically anything that could be interesting to the group. He did it in such a funny way that it kept us entertained throughout the whole drive. Lake Moraine is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. This trip was a very quick way to see some gorgeous sites. Highly recommended:)

Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway - Full-Day Tour
We had a wonderful day with Rob as our tour guide. He was knowledgeable and friendly. We saw Two Jack Lake, Lake Minnewanka, Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Crowfoot Glacier, Bow Glacier and Bow Lake. The views were incredible. Out of 1 - 10, I’d rate Moraine Lake and Peyto Lake twelves and the rest 10s. Our pictures are awesome! And we were able to see elk, sheep and a bear, too! A great experience!

Lake Louise, Moraine Lake & Emerald Lake Yoho Day Tour
We had to change the last tour to Emerald Lake due to a traffic accident on the road but they managed to take us to another place instead. The bus was comfortable and the guide and the driver were friendly. The only thing that I think could be improved is the length of the tour on each place, in some of them there's not enough time to explore or participate in other activities offered there.

Wonderful day. Megan, our tour guide, was great. Very accommodating and informative. She asked what we wanted to see at each stop, made recommendations and shared her experiences with us. The scenery was breathtaking and we did not have to worry about a thing.

Banff National Park Tour with Lake Louise and Moraine Lake
Eli was a great tour guide and gave us a lot of information about the local wildlife and history of Banff. The lakes are breakthtakingly beautiful, if you want to spend more than 40 minutes at the lake or canoe on the lakes, this isnt the tour for that. We found it to be enough time to marvel and take some great pictures.

Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway - Full-Day Tour
Absolutely stunning sights of Banff on this tour. Rob, the driver, exceeded our expectations by including a couple extra stops. He clearly explained everything we were seeing and answered questions. We saw deer, elk, mountain sheep and a bear during the day from the van. We had enough time at each stop to enjoy the experience. We highly recommend this tour.

Banff National Park Tour with Lake Louise and Moraine Lake
Great tour! The lakes are both beautiful and our tour guide, Annika, was super knowledgeable and nice. The tour was 4ish hours with a 30 minute stop at Lake Louise and a 40 minute stop at Moraine Lake. Hike up the rocks at Moraine Lake first to get a great view (but be aware it is a steep hike up natural rock stairs). Would highly recommend!

How to Get There

Moraine Lake is about nine miles (14 kilometers) from Lake Louise. Follow Moraine Lake Road, which branches off from Lake Louise Drive. Parking is limited at the site, and finding a spot can take some time. Private shuttles also depart from Lake Louise, while Parks Canada shuttles run from the Lake Louise overflow parking lot from mid-September to mid-October.

When to Get There

Access to Moraine Lake is available from mid-May through mid-October. The lake is fed by glacier melt, and water levels often remain low until late June. Larch tree viewing season, between mid-September and mid-October, is the busiest period. Sunrise is one of the best times for photographs, when the soft, low-angle light shines on the peaks and sightseers are few and far between.

Where to Find the Best Views of Moraine Lake

For views of Lake Moraine that will have you reaching for your camera, follow the 1,150-foot (350-meter) Rockpile Trail. The trail begins at the parking lot, crosses over a bridge, and connects to a series of stone steps. The steps lead up to the top of some glacial rock, from which elevated viewpoints offer sublime lake vistas. Other trails in the vicinity include the 2-mile (3-kilometer) Lakeshore Trail, a relatively easy lakeside route.
