Peyto Lake

Improvement District No. 9, Banff, Canada

The Basics

Along the Icefields Parkway, a scenic drive that runs through the Rocky Mountains between Banff National Park and Jasper National Park, is a stop for the Peyto Lake Lookout and the Bow Summit. Many Rocky Mountain parks tours travel this route—aptly named for the glacial icefields, notably the Columbia Icefield—between Banff and Jasper, to the Columbia Icefields, or around the Lake Louise area. Most stop along the way at Peyto Lake Lookout, the Icefields Discovery Centre, and more, allowing travelers to marvel at the scenery rather than driving.

Absolutely Outstanding
This is hands-down one of the best tours that I’ve ever done. The locations visited are incredible, our tour guide Robbie was awesome, and our entire group was a lot of fun. Would absolutely recommend this tour to anybody. If you’re in the Banff area for a short time, or want to make the most of a single day trip, this is for you.

Icefields Pkwy: Lake Louise | Bow Lake | Peyto Lake | Glacier - PRIVATE DAY TOUR
Manny is an exceptional tour guide! My husband and I had a wonderful day traveling the Icefield Parkway, going to the glacier, and stopping at beautiful spots like Mistaya Canyon and Peyto Lake. Also went to Bow Falls in Banff and ate a delicious steak house he recommended , The Keg. Manny goes above and beyond to make your trip memorable !!

Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway - Full-Day Tour
Absolutely stunning sights of Banff on this tour. Rob, the driver, exceeded our expectations by including a couple extra stops. He clearly explained everything we were seeing and answered questions. We saw deer, elk, mountain sheep and a bear during the day from the van. We had enough time at each stop to enjoy the experience. We highly recommend this tour.

Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway - Full-Day Tour
We had a wonderful day with Rob as our tour guide. He was knowledgeable and friendly. We saw Two Jack Lake, Lake Minnewanka, Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Crowfoot Glacier, Bow Glacier and Bow Lake. The views were incredible. Out of 1 - 10, I’d rate Moraine Lake and Peyto Lake twelves and the rest 10s. Our pictures are awesome! And we were able to see elk, sheep and a bear, too! A great experience!

Icefields Pkwy: Lake Louise | Bow Lake | Peyto Lake | Glacier - PRIVATE DAY TOUR
Amazing trip with Jeff, we saw so much and he is brilliant at taking photos of us so we got ones will all three of us at each stop. Spectacular views. It is a long day as it’s a long way but so very worth it. The price for the private tour seemed a lot sat at home but once we got going it was 100% worth it to make our trip unique and go to the places we wanted to.

Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway - Full-Day Tour
Rob gave good insight into the attractions. We visited major and less known sights. Very thoughtful of everyone’s abilities to traverse the hiking paths. Also made sure we had enough time to eat lunch since it was an all day tour. Direct pick-up from our Canmore hotel was a plus!

Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway - Full-Day Tour
This was a local family run tour and the father and son that run the tour were amazing. Funny and personable and made it feel like a home away from home. We saw the best sites, the most amazing views and were looked after the whole way. You should definitely book this if you're in town.

Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway - Full-Day Tour
Very experienced guide. Great way to see the area. Rob was informative and we had plenty of time to take photos and ask questions. We couldn't visit Moraine lake as it wasn't safe to travel there at the time, but the trip was adapted and we weren't disappointed. Would highly recommend.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Peyto Lake is a must for first-time visitors to the Icefields Parkway and Canada’s Rocky Mountain parks.

  • It’s about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot to the lookout point.

  • There is a washroom facility near the parking lot.

When to Get There

A large amount of snow in the winter will close the parkway, and snowstorms can make driving treacherous for even experienced winter drivers. However, the views of Peyto Lake in winter are stunning, and you will have far fewer crowds with which to contend. In the summer, arrive in the early morning or early evening to avoid tour bus traffic.

Best View of Peyto Lake

The Bow Summit viewing platform offers spectacular views of Peyto Lake. This easily accessible platform has a downside though: It can be very crowded. To get a less obstructed view, try walking down toward the lake via the path just past the viewing platform. Or go a little farther down the path and look for a trail on your right that leads up to another, less busy viewpoint.
