Daily 8am–6pm
1 Muir Woods Road, Mill Valley, California, 94941

The Basics

If visiting independently, follow the raised boardwalk from the park entrance and you'll find yourself at the crossroads of the park's easy and popular hiking trails. Alternatively, visit Muir Woods on an organized tour departing from San Francisco. Both half- and full-day options are available and often include stops at the nearby Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, coastal Sausalito, or even Napa Valley wine country. Combined San Francisco city tours, bay cruises, and Muir Woods visits are also popular.

Great time in Napa/Sonoma and Muir Woods!
Had a full bus tour with Mike. Very clean transportation, and Mike was an excellent guide with much information about the places along our tour. We also booked the gourmet lunch, which was quite good and very well organized! Kept to a schedule, but it was well organized and we felt we had enough time at each stop. Highly recommend!

San Francisco Super Saver: Muir Woods & Wine Country w/ optional Gourmet Lunch
Overall this was a great experience. Muir Woods was beautiful and the vineyards were a great experience. One comment, the lunch was very good, but the restaurant seated several couples at adjoining tables, not a wise thing during COVID. Roman, our tour guide was terrific.

Small Group Half Day Muir Woods and Sausalito Morning Tour
Good tour. I felt like I got my money's worth. The van was clean and comfortable and pick up/drop off was a breeze. Muir Woods is just beautiful and I could have spent an entire day there. I went with my 16 y/o daughter and she absolutely loved it. Well worth it.

Muir Woods & Sausalito Half-Day Tour (Return by Bus or Ferry from Sausalito)
Muir Woods, Sausalito, and the ferry ride were lovely. We also had a nice photo op by the Golden Gate Bridge. Our guide was very informative. Even though the bus was clean and the seats were comfortable, it was a little bit warm and stuffy inside. There were twists and turns during the ride. We felt a little bit nauseous. Muir woods is amazing. Not to be missed. We are certainly not sorry that we took the trip, but we did feel a little sick.

This tour was just perfect! Robert, our guide, was very informative and made our tour very fun!!! The time spent at the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods, and Sausalito was just the right amount of time! Our lunch in Sausalito was delicious and we had the perfect view of the bay, San Francisco, and Alcatraz right from our table. The van was comfortable and just the right size!

3-1 Muir Woods Visit with Sausalito & Half Day Wine Country (All fees included)
Charles, the driver, was fabulous. Gave us a lot of history of the area. The van held approx 18 passengers with leather seats. The Muir Woods were great to experience. We had approx 90 minutes, which was enough. Would use this company again.

Muir Woods is always pleasant and refreshing. I did not care for the wineries. They were very small and did not offer nice views of the vineyards

How To Get There

Muir Woods is located just 12 miles (19 kilometers) north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge, making it an easy day trip from the city. It's possible to arrive by public transit, but the easiest way is by organized tour. If coming by car, drive north on Highway 101, continue north along Highway 1 (Shoreline Highway), then take the Panoramic Highway to Four Corners, where you'll turn left onto Muir Woods Road.

When to Get There

Muir Woods is open from 8am to sunset during summer and closes at 5pm in winter. The site can become quite crowded, especially on weekends, so try to come midweek, early in the morning, or late in the afternoon to beat the crowds. Even at busy times, a short hike will get you out of the densest crowds and onto trails with giant redwoods and stunning vistas though.

Show all

Hiking and biking along the well-marked trails are the most popular things to do in Muir Woods, but visitors can also look out for several critters such as chipmunks, squirrels, owls, and—near the Redwood Creek—sea otters. Kids can also enjoy their visit to Muir Woods with a free-to-download, activity-packed Junior Ranger booklet which includes animal-spotting activities.
